Greek Burger

This summer, why not combine the classic American hamburger with a refreshing Mediterranean spin Combined with a cool tzatziki sauce, this is the perfect barbecue treat for those long hot days. This recipe will go down a storm and goes great with a Greek salad. You might be a traditionalist when it comes to burgers but the fresh yoghurt and cucumber topping for this burger is a cool break from the usual toppings. For more tasty beef dishes, go to


What you’ll need

1lb lean ground beef

1 teaspoon dried oregano

2oz low fat feta cheese, nicely crumbled

2 teaspoons red onion, diced

½ teaspoon black pepper

2 garlic cloves, grated

16oz pot plain Greek yoghurt

2 tablespoons fresh dill

1 cucumber

For the burgers – Take a bowl and add the beef, oregano, feta, 1 clove of grated garlic and the black pepper. It’s more effective to use your hands to mix lightly so all ingredients combine well.

Shape four patties so they are the same size as your rolls. A good method is to make them thicker around the edge with a small dent in the middle of the patty.

To prepare the tzatziki, peel the cucumber and grate. Put the yoghurt, cucumber, 1 grated garlic clove and dill into a bowl. Add a pinch of salt, mix well and refrigerate until serving time.

Grill the patties for about 5 minutes each side or fry in a pan over a medium heat until nicely brown and cooked to your desired level.

Serve hot on the rolls, adding lettuce garnish, sliced red onion and the cool, refreshing tzatziki sauce.

A great-tasting burger and a good healthy option too. You could also serve alongside a Greek salad for a real feast of a family get together.

What you’ll need

1 red onion, sliced

3 tomatoes, wedges

1 cucumber, sliced

1 green pepper

7oz block feta cheese

16 black olives

¼ cup extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

Sea salt

1 teaspoon dried oregano


Start by washing the veggies and straining. Cut the tomatoes into wedges and slice the onion into rings. The cucumber should be cut into thick slices after being peeled and then throw it all in together into a large bowl with the olives too.

Add the extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar, season with salt and toss well. Only a dash of salt is needed as olives and feta are quite salty.

Serve the salad with the feta on top, a dash of olive oil and the dried oregano to garnish. The ideal accompaniment to a Greek style burger with tzatsaki sauce.
