Many of us love a bit of fire in our food and if this is you then ditch the dull burger and spice things up by going Mexican for your barbecue or mealtimes. Reinvigorate your taste buds with an infusion of chilli and salsa with this quick and easy spicy burger recipe. The great thing about making your own patties is that you know exactly what you’re feeding your family and the variations of flavors you can add, means the classic burger never gets old. This recipe will feed 4-6 people.
What you’ll need
1kg lean ground beef
½ cup breadcrumbs
3 chopped garlic cloves
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon coriander
½ teaspoon cumin
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground cloves
6 slices of cheese
6 hamburger buns
For the salsa
3 big tomatoes, chopped
1 big onion, peeled and diced
½ red chilli, de-seeded
½ cup fresh parsley, chopped finely
Salt and pepper
For the guacamole
Salt and pepper
Juice of lemon
2 big ripe avocados
Method for the burgers
Take a large bowl and place in all the ingredients to mix well. Add some oil to a large frying pan and heat. Fry a little amount first to check the seasoning is right before going ahead to fry all the mixture after forming them into patty shapes.
Cook for about 5 minutes on each side until nicely brown and cooked right through. When your patties are near completion add the slices of cheese on the top of each patty to melt nicely. For added kick, try using spicy Mexican cheese!

Place all your salsa ingredients into a large bowl and thoroughly mix. Store until ready to serve with spicy burgers. It’s as easy as that – no cooking involved just prepping your veggies.
Method for the guacamole
Take the flesh off the avocado and mash up with the lemon juice, salt and pepper. All done – a delicious cool and zingy guacamole as the perfect accompaniment to your spicy burger.
The perfect pairing with this burger is a spicy smoked potato salad. It’s simple, takes less than an hour and serves 8 hungry people.
What you’ll need
2 tablespoons paprika
1 ½ tablespoon salt
1 ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon chipotle chilli powder
2lbs sweet potatoes, sliced into half-moon shapes
2 teaspoons adobo sauce
2 scallions, sliced
2 teaspoons olive oil
4 bacon slices
¾ cup mayo
2 tablespoons whole-grain mustard
Combine the salt, sugar, paprika, chilli powder, pepper and mustard in a bowl and mix thoroughly.
Put the potatoes into a large pan of cold water and bring to the boil until they are almost cooked. Drain the potatoes and place in a bowl. Add the oil over the top and 2 tablespoons of the paprika rub. Toss really thoroughly.
Cook the bacon over a medium heat on a skillet until crispy. Break up the bacon into crumbly pieces and set to one side.
If you have a stovetop smoker, place sawdust chips in the bottom and put the potatoes on the rack. Heat on medium for 15 minutes.
Combine the mayo, mustard, salt, black pepper, scallions and adobo sauce adding in half the potatoes and bacon. Give the mix a good toss and then add the rest of the bacon. Refrigerate until serving time!
